The African Queen dress is a tribute to all the strong women who work in the second-hand clothing industry in Africa. The rug is designed by Eno Andrew Essien from Nigeria and handwoven in Kenya. It contains approximately 40 upcycled, non-wearable or non-saleable jeans, all collected in Nairobi.
By collecting and upcycling used textiles, Africa Collect Textiles (ACT) gives the go-ahead for a circular economy for textiles in Africa. They prevent materials from being thrown away on land or burned in the open air. In addition, they create solid and well-paid jobs.
The image of the powerful African woman is deliberately larger than the cloth itself, her ambitions reach further and burst out of the existing frames.
