How it's made // Ashanti Design

Never before have we bought so much (cheap) clothing as now, and never before did we throw it away so quickly. Billions of jeans, dresses, sweaters and other fashion items flood the market every year. The production of this fast fashion creates an unparalleled clothing waste mountain. How do we eliminate these in a sustainable way?

Part of this is down-cycled into cleaning cloths, insulating material or the mattress fillings, but the majority goes directly into the incinerator or ends up in the landfill.

The upcycling process starts at Ashanti Design! Ashanti Design buys off-cuts from the clothing factories. These fabrics are sorted by color, cut into usable pieces and rolled into large balls of cotton. The cotton balls are brought to weavers in the South African countryside, where they are woven into high-quality textiles on large looms. These looms are in people's homes, as we used to know in the Netherlands.
Partly due to the modern and contemporary textile processing style of Ashanti Design, this traditional craftsmanship is retained for future generations.

 

The colors and patterns of the upcycled fabric are chosen on site by the craftsman / woman behind the loom. That is why every 'Ashanti' is unique and no two are the same. Bean bags, bags, pillows and colorful accessories are made from the pieces of upcycled fabric.

Ashanti Design finds it important to increase the livelihood of their employees and to make a positive 'Afronomical' contribution in general. From artisans to transport partners and manufacturers, the Ashanti team is completely African.

Cradle to Cradle
Nic & Mic gives you the choice of 2 types of filling for the bean bags:
A plastic-free filling of BioFoampearls. These quality pearls are fully biodegradable and Cradle2Cradle certified. After many years of sitting pleasure, the bean bag can be emptied into the green container. A bean bag to relax in with confidence!
Or a filling of shredded flip flops, cutting waste that is released during the production of Ocean Sole images. This gives a sturdy seat, suitable for a public space or office situation.
